Bristol Compressors of Sparta will likely close on Sept. 13, according to a company official in the manufacturer's main office in Virginia. Dave Crockett, vice president of human resources for Bristol, said that about 60 employees remain working at the plant. Crockett said that all of those workers will likely continue their employment until the close date.
About 200 Bristol workers were laid off from the plant on July 26, according to Arvill Scott, branch manager at the Alleghany Employment Security Commission in Sparta.
Peak employment at Bristol was about 440 employees, Scott said. That number was employed within the last 12 months.
As for the workers, local prospects remain grim.
"They're beginning to find jobs in different fields, but right now, there's not a lot of things to offer close by," said Scott. "Everybody is consumed right now with transitioning into other job opportunities."
