Old Ways — Meghan Haller (left in photo at left) "warps the loom," preparing it for the weaver, inside the Brinegar Cabin while Ranger Mindy DeCesar (in uniform) discusses the process with visitors. The demonstration was part of the 16th annual "Brinegar Days" celebration, held on the cabin grounds by the Blue Ridge Parkway. Exhibitions also included blacksmithing, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, spinning and bluegrass/mountain music.
The event is a celebration of the heritage of
Caroline and Martin Brinegar, who began building the cabin in 1886. In
the photo at right, members of the Appalachian Hoedowners, a dance team
based in southwestern Virginia, entertain the crowd.
