Guy L. Scott dies in Sparta home

Guy L. Scott Jr. died July 30 at his home in Sparta. Scott was a well-known local banking figure, who started his career at City Bank in Winston-Salem.

Scott later returned to school to attain the status of a certified public accountant and set up a CPA practice in Sparta.

After a number of years as a local CPA, Scott returned to banking and later was named president and chief executive officer of Blue Ridge Bank. He retired from First Community Bank, which purchased Blue Ridge.

Harold Church, a charter member of the Blue Ridge Bank board, said, "I was the personnel chairman when he was hired. We felt like he was the man for the job. He was a very knowledgeable, smart man. When we had to go before the banking commissioners to get the bank chartered, they were not too sure we had what we needed to run a bank, but Guy was very confident and convincing and we were able to continue. He was quite obviously an able banker."

Ted Stern, the first chairman of the Blue Ridge Bank Board, said Scott was a good businessman. "He was very trustworthy and honest as the day is long," noted Stern. "He was a man of integrity.

"I've known him ever since I've been up here," Stern said. "I came up here in 1972.
