Two are found dead inside N.C. 18 home

An elderly woman and her son were both found dead in a home on N.C. 18 north Friday, according to a press release from the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department.

Upon an initial investigation, the sheriff's department discovered the bodies of Mabel Choate Smith, 82, and Roger Lee Miller, 57.

It was unclear how long the bodies had been in the house and law enforcement officials declined to speculate.

Both died of natural causes in the mobile home, at 5829 N.C. 18 north, near Old Quarry Road, and no foul play is suspected following an autopsy at the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill. The initial report from the coroner was received on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The deaths were reported to authorities by visiting family members. Miller had been living in the home for about two years caring for his mother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

No further details on the deaths were available as of presstime on Tuesday.
