Guy L. Scott dies in Sparta home

Guy L. Scott Jr. died July 30 at his home in Sparta. Scott was a well-known local banking figure, who started his career at City Bank in Winston-Salem.

Gymatorium now open for use

At long last, Alleghany High School has begun using its new gymnasium. "We're just excited about it being finished and being in it," said AHS Principal Barbara Lyon.

Correction

Due to an error, Melvin T. Jackson, a candidate for N.C. House of Representatives, was listed as a Republican candidate. Jackson, a former Surry County Commissioner and teacher for 30 years at North Surry High School, is actually a Democrat. Jackson will face fellow Democrats Todd Harris and Jim Harrell in the Sept. 10 primary.
