An Independence, Va. woman charged in a motor-vehicle fatality in May received a suspended sentence last week and was ordered to pay restitution for hospital and funeral costs.
Flora Jean Kirk, 70, of Independence pleaded no contest to misdemeanor death by vehicle during the July 23 session of Alleghany County District Criminal Court.
The charge resulted from a May 11 crash in which 55-year-old Kay M. Henderson of Sparta was killed.
Judge David V. Byrd gave Kirk a 45-day suspended sentence and 24 months unsupervised probation. He also ordered her to pay restitution, $7,231.74 for Henderson's funeral bill and $1,398.74 for Henderson's hospital bill, within 12 months, as well as court costs.
Kirk was also charged with failure to stop for a stop sign or flashing red light, a traffic infraction, in the accident.
