JEFFERSON — Three men charged for a Nov. 29, 2001 murder in Laurel Springs will spend time in jail — two of them more than 11 years each, the third more than five years.
Angel Cruz Gomes, 24, of Dudley, Usiel Perez Matias, 21, of Dudley and Gregorio Viteruo Gonzales, 32, whose address was listed as unknown, had been charged with the beating death of Jose Alfredo Ramirez in the Cranberry Creek area of Ashe County, near the Alleghany County line.
The Alleghany County Sheriff's Department had started the investigation, but turned it over to the Ashe County Sheriff's Department after realizing that the crime had actually not occurred in Alleghany.
All three were indicted in March.
