Election filing set Sept. 10

The North Carolina House of Representatives passed a new election schedule by unanimous approval Monday night that sets the much-delayed primary election for Sept. 10.

If the measure is approved by the N.C. Senate, as expected, it will then go to the U.S. Justice Department for a final approval. State election officials expect a rapid federal approval, said local Director of Elections Karen K. Fender. Fender said that filing for the primary could begin as soon as this Friday, July 19. If that is the case, then the abbreviated filing period would end as of July 26.

"I think we are all pleased to finally get the ball rolling on this election," Fender said. "All of the information that I have heard so far indicates that this House plan will be passed by the Senate"
