A Sparta man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Sunday night at 9:15 p.m. on Fraser Road, according to a report by Trooper S.R. Grizzell.

Killed was Bartolo Ramos, 31, of Hudson Road in Sparta. Ramos and another man, Antonio Reivea, 28, were the only two people found at the scene of the accident, Grizzell said. Both men were ejected from the vehicle, a 1993 Chevrolet two-door.

However, Reivea told authorities that neither he nor Ramos were driving the vehicle.

According to Grizzell's account of the accident, the vehicle was traveling west on Fraser Road near the intersection with Grandview Drive (near the new bridge) when it ran off the right side of the road. The driver apparently over-corrected and veered off the right side of the road and traveled down an embankment, striking several trees in the process.

The vehicle came to rest on the driver's side near the waters of Little River.

Ramos was pinned beneath the vehicle and was pronounced dead on arrival at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, said Grizzell.

Reivea was transported by AirCare to N.C. Baptist Hospital, where he was treated and admitted. He was in satisfactory condition as of presstime Tuesday.
