Jenkins new districting plan likely will be final

The state attorney general has appealed the ruling of Superior Court Judge Knox V. Jenkins who, on May 31, rejected redistricting maps drawn by the legislature and submitted his own maps. Those maps will be used for State Senate and House races on an interim basis this year while allowing this year's newly-elected legislators to redraw maps next year which will be used through the year 2010.

In the maps made public by Jenkins, Alleghany will be in State Senate District 45, which will include all of Alleghany County, Ashe County, Caldwell County and Watauga County, along with the following Wilkes precincts: Boomer, Jobs Cabin, Reddies River, Union, Mount Pleasant and Ferguson.

Two incumbents are set to clash in the district, which includes the homes of Senator Ken Moore of Lenoir and Senator Virginia Foxx of Watauga. Foxx is the senator currently serving Alleghany, along with Phil Berger of Rockingham. Both serve the former 12th district.
