The Alleghany Board of Education on Tuesday named Barbara Lyon as the new principal at Alleghany High School.
Lyon has served as AHS' assistant principal for 10 years. She came to the high school from Glade Creek Elementary School, where she taught eighth grade and fourth grade.
The announcement followed a three-month search process, begun when the board accepted Principal Jeff Peal's resignation.
Board Chairman Charles Joines said of Lyon, "I'd say she's very dedicated and has worked hard and deserved it."
The school system had 13 applicants for the position. Lyon was the only one from Alleghany. Five of the applicants were from outside North Carolina; the furthest was from Vermont.
Lyon's appointment was part of a slate of personnel actions approved by the board at the conclusion of a special called meeting Tuesday. The board's vote also renewed the contracts of Glade Creek Elementary School Principal Gary West, Finance Officer Karen Leys, Vocational/Cafeteria Director Margaret Dalton, Testing Coordinator Frank Busic, Technology Coordinator Britt Shaw and Special Programs Director Janice Linker; and accepted the resignation of Wes Hutchens as an exceptional children's teacher at Sparta Elementary School.
