The former New River Country Care Center (NRCC) location has been purchased by an Elkin company and will remain open, according to new owner Scott Stanley.
Stanley, who is also the owner of Carolina Select Healthcare in Jonesville, said in a recent interview that the new business, Alleghany Assisted Living, has about seven clients at this time, but hopes to add more soon. The center has a certificate from the state to house 98 residents. Stanley purchased the business from Diversicare, a Kernersville-based company that operated the facility. The actual building was owned by A.S. "Steve" Pierce of Kernersville, who leased it to Diversicare. NRCC announced plans to close on April 17 and was scheduled to close by May 17. As of early May, the facility had 24 patients. About 12 of those patients were transferred to Sunbridge, while several others were sent to other locations.
"Before we could get any kind of concrete deal with Diversicare, they had already started transferring patients," Stanley said. "We got it stopped at seven." Stanley took over the facility at midnight on May 17, the earlier reported closing date for NRCC.
The assisted living level of care at the new facility is for those who might need some help in going about their daily tasks, but don't need 24-hour care. Stanley said that all of the former administrative staff is gone, but he hired as many of the facility's employees as he could.
