Mowdown attended by about 1,300

About 1,300 people turned out Saturday for the first-annual CarQuest Spring Mowdown.

"We were very pleasantly surprised with the turnout for the race, especially considering that this was the first time we've ever had one in the spring," said race organizer and fair committee member Bob Edwards. All proceeds from the event went to the Alleghany County Agricultural Fair.

"We raised about $4,500 from ticket sales," Edwards said. "The racers voted for all the proceeds to go to the fair and didn't ask for any premiums for this race. It was a commendable thing for them to do." Each first, second and third-place winner was given a trophy.
