Alleghany County school officials are closer to selecting a new principal for Alleghany High School, but a formal announcement is likely more than a month away.
"We're coming near the end of the process," said Superintendent Duane Davis. He said last week that the school system has done about two-thirds of the interviews of applicants.
The Alleghany County Board of Education formally accepted Principal Jeff Peal's resignation March 6. Peal is leaving AHS at the end of the school year to take the post of principal at the new North Wilkes Middle School in Wilkes County.
The school system began taking applications on that date, and the application period ended about a month ago.
Personnel/Student Services Director Brenda Sutherland said they ended up with 13 applicants. One of those is from Alleghany, she added.
