A sparse crowd turned out in the unseasonably cold, blustery conditions at the Justice Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds for the Alleghany Volunteer Services Fair last Saturday.
The fair featured four competitions between the Sparta, Laurel Springs, Cherry Lane, Glade Creek and Piney Creek fire departments, and the AirCare helicopter from N.C. Baptist Hospital was on display for about an hour. Six competitions and a dunking booth were originally slated, but the dunking booth was scratched due to the cold temperatures, and only four competitions were held because of time constraints.
Volunteer firemen competed in obstacle course, tug of war, bucket
brigade and barrel roll events. In addition, food including hamburgers,
hot dogs, blooming onions and funnel cakes was available.
