The first-annual CarQuest Spring Mowdown is set for Saturday night at the Justice Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds in Sparta.
The race is slated to begin at 7 p.m., with inspections for racers beginning at 3 p.m. and ending at 6:30 p.m.
The race has been held in the fall for the past two years; however, the organizers decided to also sponsor the spring race as an added attraction. The spring event, which is sponsored by CarQuest of Alleghany and the Alleghany County Fair Committee, will feature lawnmower racers from all over the county.
"We have a good number of entries this year," commented Alleghany Cooperative Extension Director Bob Edwards, one of the event's organizers. "There are about 30 entries in different classes in the race from several local drivers."
Classes include three modified divisions, one super-stock division and a 'legends' class for drivers 55 and over. Admission is $5 per person, with children eight and under admitted free.
On Thursday, a number of local racers plan to display their racing mowers at CarQuest in Sparta for the public. Mowers will be on display all that day.
For more information, call the extension service at 372-5597 or Gerald Leftwich, who is organizing mower inspections, at 372-6220.
