The Northwest Regional Library Board voted last week to cut hours for regional employees by 20 percent and to borrow funds to make up for an unexpected state funding shortfall. The move will temporarily stave off any possible library closings, but continued funding shortfalls could lead to future problems.
The NWRL operates 13 libraries in four counties, including Alleghany, Surry, Stokes and Yadkin.
The NWRL was thrown into crisis two weeks ago when an unexpected announcement came that the State Library Board was withholding May and June aid payments from the region, resulting in a shortfall of $70,873.
However, the May payment was reinstated as of May 14, meaning that the NWRL was instead shorted $35,436 for the month of June only.
