Mary Rowland, a first-grade teacher at Piney Creek Elementary School, has been named Alleghany County's Teacher of the Year.
Rowland, who lives in Troutdale, Va., has worked at Piney Creek Elementary since 1990. She started her teaching career in Kentucky, teaching first and second grade at Ryland Elementary in Kenton County.
Here in Alleghany County, Rowland started working as a Language Arts Teacher for grades six, seven and eight. She moved into her current position in 1998.
Rowland has served as a member of her school's school improvement team, the chairperson of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Planning Committee and as textbook coordinator for Piney Creek School. Rowland graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education.
As part of her honor, Rowland received a silver tray and a $200 check. As a result of her countywide win, Rowland will also be involved in the regional teacher of the year competition this fall.
