Initial First Friday event cancelled

The Sparta Revitalization Committee will not begin its "First Friday" venture this week as planned.

The initial entertainment/downtown promotion event in the series was scheduled for this Friday, May 3.

"We were just not able to pull all the pieces together to get it accomplished," said Sandy Carter, vice-president of the SRC and chairman of its promotions subcommittee. She said the decision to cancel the event was reached last weekend. "There were too many obstacles to overcome in such a short period of time."

Carter said the SRC now plans to begin First Friday on June 7 instead, in conjunction with the Relay for Life that same weekend. She said the First Friday effort would augment Relay for Life, and the SRC will have a booth at Woodruff Field during that event.

Other plans for what First Friday will include then are indefinite at this point.

She said she hopes members of the JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) program at Sparta Elementary School will participate. JAM had agreed to participate this month. Members of the First Baptist Church's Hispanic mission had also agreed to participate in the May First Friday, which was to have been built around the theme of "Cinco de Mayo."

Carter said the promotions subcommittee foresees holding First Friday events in August and September as well. The group had already decided not to schedule a First Friday for July, as that would be the weekend of the Fourth of July parade, which is also coordinated by the SRC. That parade is scheduled for July 6 at 11 a.m.
