Alleghany County Schools has about nine applicants for the principal position at Alleghany High School.
Personnel/Student Services Director Brenda Sutherland said the application period closed last Friday, and school officials are meeting this week to set up an interview schedule. She said they hope to have an announcement on the recommendation of a new principal ready for the Alleghany County Board of Education meeting next month.
"It's going well," Sutherland said last week of the principal search. "We're pretty close."
The school system began taking applications March 6, when the Alleghany County Board of Education formally accepted Jeff Peal's resignation as principal. Peal is leaving AHS at the end of the school year to take the principal post at the new North Wilkes Middle School in Wilkes County.
The position was advertised on an "open until filled" basis. "We didn't want to tie our hands," said Superintendent Duane Davis in March, by setting a specific application deadline.
One of the applicants is from Alleghany, she said. Most of the others are from elsewhere in North Carolina, including several from nearby counties. One application came from New Jersey. However, that applicant is originally from North Carolina and has worked as an administrator in this state, said Sutherland.
