Arnold L. Young, a 72-year-old resident of the Pine Swamp Community and a local attorney with an office on North Main Street in Sparta, died Saturday evening at his home. Young was a well-known local figure, stemming from his volunteer service in Alleghany County beginning soon after he arrived here to practice law in the mid 1960s.
Young worked with numerous organizations serving both youths and adults. Among those benefiting from his efforts were the Sparta Lions Club, Alleghany 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts of America, the VFW, the Alleghany Horseman's Association and the Senior Tar Heel Legislature.
Young was born in Georgia, but moved to Alleghany County after graduating from law school in 1964 and set up his practice.
Prior to attending law school, Young served in the U.S. Army in the Korean
War and received a Silver Star and Purple Heart.
