Wellness Center sets date for groundbreaking

The Alleghany Wellness Center will formally break ground Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m.

AWCI (Alleghany Wellness Center Incorporated) officials have invited the public to the ceremony at the facility site on Collins Road.

Last weekend, members of the N.C. National Guard brought in equipment for the site development work they already have agreed to do.

According to a press release from Carolyn Sprinkle, project coordinator for AWCI, the guard is scheduled to return the weekends of May 4-5 and June 1-2 and for two weeks from June 15 to June 29, moving equipment and doing other site preparation work.

The guard's labor is an in-kind donation.

"The estimated value of this work is approximately $200,000 and has been a terrific boost to the Alleghany Wellness Center Inc. capital campaign of $3 million," said Sprinkle.

The groundbreaking event represents a milestone in the effort to raise funds and build a wellness center in Alleghany, which began six years ago. Plans call for the facility to include an indoor swimming pool, a gymnasium with a walking track and a fitness/aerobics center.

So far AWCI has raised $1,980,847. Along with the guard's work, that figure also includes a $600,000 anonymous donation made in 1997, a $300,000 federal appropriation and grants including $50,000 from the Cannon Foundation, $8,000 from Chevy Rock/Trojan Chevrolet, $25,000 from Frank Borden Hanes, $10,000 from the Hillsdale Fund, $30,000 from the Janirve Foundation, $100,000 from the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation, $50,000 from the Reeves Foundation and $10,000 from the Richard J. and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation. AWCI has also raised $597,847 from individuals, industry and board and committee members.

"Money raised reflects the dedication and continued support of the community as well as the members of the AWCI board and committees," Sprinkle added.
