AT WORK — John Sturgill, a Piney Creek artist, works on a landscape painting during Springfest, an event sponsored by the Alleghany County Arts Council and partially funded by a N.C. Arts Council grassroots grant. The painting in the photograph was Sturgill's second of the day — the first was sold at auction to benefit the Arts Council.
The silent auction raised $1,114. Items sold included white elephant items, pottery from Ben Owens, Robin Cater and Mangum Pottery, prints by June Furlow, John Furchess and Harry Tepker, original artworks by Chris Elliott-Davis and Elizabeth Davis, photography by Bill Rost and other items.
In the photo at left, the Mountain Homespun Fiber Guild's Shirley Kurtz of Independence, Va. spins romney wool into yarn for knitting or weaving. She said the yarn being made that day would be used to make a sweater — most likely this fall, given the weather.
