PLACING FIRST — Muskrat Marauders of Sparta Elementary School placed
first in the middle school division during the fourth annual Northwest
Envirothon held Thursday, April 11, at the Edwin H. McGee Natural
Resources Conservation Center in North Wilkesboro. Team members are,

Two middle school teams from Alleghany, the Muskrat Marauders from Sparta Elementary and the Conservation Cowboys from Glade Creek Elementary, placed first and third respectively during the fourth annual Northwest Envirothon held at the Edwin H. McGee Natural Resources Conservation Center, located in North Wilkesboro.
Placing second in the high school division were the Agrimaniacs from Alleghany High School.
More schools and counties participated in this year's event than previous years with 31 middle school teams and 12 high school teams from seven counties taking part in the Envirothon. Figured in these totals are two 4-H clubs that participated in each division. There were over 200 students who took part in the Envirothon.
Counties represented Thursday, from Area 2, which consists of 13 counties, were Alexander, Alleghany, Burke, Catawba, Forsyth, Stokes and Wilkes. There were a total of two high school teams and 14 middle school teams competing from Alleghany County.
The top seven high schools and middle schools in Area 2 will advance to the state competition at Cedarock Park in Burlington on April 26-27. National competition will be held July 29-Aug. 4 in Massachusetts.
The top seven high school teams are: Tigers from Fred T. Foard High School in Catawba County, first place; Agrimaniacs from Alleghany High School in Alleghany County, second place; Vikings II from North Wilkes High School, third place; Blue Devils from Maiden High School in Catawba County, fourth place; Patriots from Freedom High School in Burke County, fifth place; Tigers Too from Fred T. Foard High School in Catawba County, sixth place; Glenn Bobcats from Glenn High School in Forsyth County, seventh place.
A tie had to be broken for the fifth and sixth place slots.
The top seven middle school teams are: Muskrat Marauders from Sparta
Elementary in Alleghany County, first place; Peregrine Falcons from
Northwest Middle School in Forsyth County, second place; Conservation
Cowboys from Glade Creek Elementary School in Alleghany County.
