A little more than seven miles of unpaved roads will be resurfaced in Alleghany County under a N.C. Department of Transportation secondary road construction plan for fiscal years 2002-2003.
The plan allocates a total of $1,962,738 for Alleghany County's secondary roads, which includes $1.6 million for paving unpaved roadways. According to DOT figures, the county is allocated $1,163,490 from the highway fund and $799,248 from the N.C. Highway Trust Fund. The trust fund was set up in 1989 to help emphasize paving secondary roads.
The paving priority list is revised every four years and this coming year will mark the second year on the current four-year plan.
A public hearing on the road plan is slated for 7 p.m. on April 22 at the Alleghany County Office Building on Main Street in Sparta. The public hearing gives citizens an opportunity to comment on the road priorities and other secondary road needs in Alleghany.
A total of nine gravel roads are included on the 2002-2003 list to be paved. Based on the four year plan, the roads are listed to be graded, drained, based and paved as follows:
