With very little discussion from board members, the Alleghany County Board of Education unanimously approved its 2002-03 budget request on March 22. The proposed budget, presented during a special meeting of the board, asks for 12.91 percent more than the county allocated last year for current expenses and 12.28 percent more for capital outlays. Overall, the request is up about 13 percent over the amount actually allocated last year (12.76 percent).
In the local fund, the current expense proposal totals $1,994,807, compared to $1,907,131 for 2001-02. Some of that is to come from fines and forfeitures, a lowered fund balance and other sources. The board is asking for a $1,641,207 allocation from the county, an increase over the $1,453,595 allocation for the current year.
For capital outlays, the board is asking for $514,099 from the county, compared to last year's allocation of $457,856.
Karen Leys, finance officer for Alleghany County Schools, said the budget request would be submitted to the county Tuesday for consideration by the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners.
