A study on the possibility of opening an artists' co-operative in Sparta is well underway, with results expected to be announced next month.

The study, sponsored by the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce and Sparta Revitalization Committee, is funded through a $10,000 grant from Western Carolina University's Center for Regional Development.

The study will be presented to WCU on April 11 and will thereafter be available to the public, according to chamber Executive Director Leanne Murray.

Conducting the survey is Kate Irwin, a local artist specializing in calligraphy.

"She makes a living as an artist and is plugged in to the artist community," Murray said. Irwin also runs the Duck Roost Inn in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
