Mediation continues in Barbara Halsey's lawsuit against the Alleghany County Board of Education.
Halsey, a former teacher at Piney Creek Elementary School, is suing the board over its June 2000 decision not to grant her career status or renew her teaching contract.
An ordered mediated settlement conference began Feb. 13 in Winston-Salem. "The mediation process is still ongoing," John W. Gresham of Charlotte, Halsey's attorney, said Tuesday. "It is recessed but not completed." Gresham said the mediation process has included a full day in Winston-Salem and a number of conference calls since then.
He said the mediator - in this case, J. Dickson Phillips III of Durham - can recess or continue the mediation, or terminate it if the parties cannot reach a settlement.
