Local residents were recently given the opportunity to test their homes for radon content through the North Carolina Division of Radiation Protection and the N.C. Cooperative Extension.

A total of 150 residents participated here, while residents in Ashe and Watauga were also invited to participate. 350 test kits were distributed within those two counties.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is released as a result of natural radioactivity in soil.

Locally, Cooperative Extension Agent Carmen Long distributed kits around the county, which were used to test homes from Jan. 27 through Feb. 1. Each kit was to be mailed to the lab doing the analysis and results were mailed to home-owners.
