Alleghany's celebration of Black History Month was a family occasion. Members of two local families were featured leading different portions of the program, which included music, scripture, prayer, poetry and even a simulated wedding ceremony.
About 50 people, including all five Alleghany County Commissioners, packed the meeting room at the Alleghany County Library for the eighth-annual Black History celebration Feb. 19.
Leslie Choate coordinated the program, and several of her family assisted.
Her cousin Grace Wilkins offered the invocation. Choate's sister-in-law Carol
Choate sang "Amazing Grace" and nephew Jack Choate Jr. sang "This is the Air I
Breathe".
