School board race lacks candidates

Edwards files for re-election

Alleghany's School Board was short on candidates as of Tuesday evening, while three candidates were vying for a return trip to the county commission. The filing period will end Friday, March 1, at noon.

Republican Robert 'Eldon' Edwards filed last Friday as a candidate for re- election for county commission. Edwards, who currently serves as the board's vice chairman, was the third of three candidates to seek re-election. Filing earlier were current commission chairman Democrat Ken Richardson and Democrat Charity Gambill.

None of the three incumbent school board members have filed to run for re- election so far. They are Democrat Chairman Charles Joines, Democrat Vice Chair David Caldwell and Republican Gary Murphy.

However, political newcomer Jack Conaway, the county's planner, has thrown his hat in the ring. Conaway, a Republican, is thus far the board's only candidate.

Several candidates filed recently in Raleigh for district-wide offices.
