The Town of Sparta officially acquired the present Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation (BREMCO) building on Main Street last week.
Town officials have announced plans to use the building as Sparta's new town hall and maintenance facility. The move is expected to take place later this year.
The town and BREMCO closed the deal Feb. 12. According to Town Manager Tom Douglas, the town made the down payment of $555,400, half the $1,110,800 purchase price. The remainder is being financed at 5 percent interest for just less than seven years.
"They sold it to us for tax value, what it's listed for in the Alleghany County tax books," he stated.
The total property is about 1.8 acres.
