A Dobson-based company has reached an agreement to purchase the former Spring Ford Knitting facility on Trojan Avenue in Sparta.
Piedmont Medical Inc. plans to begin manufacturing operations at the facility in early April, and plans to create about 20 new jobs.
The company specializes in reconditioning hospital beds and stretchers and has sales throughout the United States and internationally, according to a release from the company.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to open a new facility in Sparta," said Byron Wurdeman, president of Piedmont Medical. "The facility fits our needs very well and we are very impressed with the quality of the work force.
In short, this is a great match between our company and Alleghany County." The new jobs created will include production operators, paint technicians, supervisors, a biomedical technician and office personnel.
Established in 1992, Piedmont Medical currently operates a 38,000 square-foot facility in Dobson. When the company moved into its current Dobson location in 1999, it represented the fifth expansion in its brief history. The business started in the back bedroom of Wurdeman’s house and has grown steadily ever since.
"I believe in keeping as much business as possible in the local economy," Wurdeman said.
"The medical field is rapidly growing and our leadership in providing high quality products continues to grow with it," he added. "The Sparta facility will represent our sixth significant expansion since the company was founded.
