The 35th annual WCOK Heart Fund Auction is set to begin this Saturday, Feb. 16.
Volunteers are excited about the upcoming effort. "We enjoy it," said Cornelia Reeves, president of the Alleghany unit of the American Heart Association. "It's an enjoyable day, and it's for such a worthwhile cause." Funds raised during the auction, which will continue the following Saturday, Feb. 23, go to the American Heart Association in its fight against heart disease, the number one cause of death in the U.S.
Reeves and fund raising Chairman Virginia Setzer, who has led the annual endeavor since its inception, have been collecting items donated for the auction.
Those items include a dodo bird, hand carved from cypress wood by Heather Williams as her senior project at Alleghany High School; a cherry/cedar blanket chest with cedar inside by Tom Atwood; a pine/cedar chest made by John Wayne Edwards; a number 3 car poster with Dale Earnhardt's autograph; a Richard Petty photograph; golf foursomes from New River Country Club and High Meadows Country Club; an afghan from Jo Ann Johnson; a wheel-barrow planter from Herbert Johnson.
Edible goods are traditionally among the most popular items available during the event, and once again the auction will feature homemade jams, jellies, cakes, pies and other items made by cooks
