The Alleghany County Board of Elections is in the process of moving into a new home.

The office is moving from its current location 85 East Whitehead Street on the second floor of the Senior Center (the grey stone building directly behind the Alleghany County Courthouse) to a new office, located at 53 West Whitehead Street (N.C. 18 south), at the intersection with Jones Street. The county has used the building before as a temporary location for the Alleghany County Tax Office, while lead abatement procedures were being done on the courthouse. The most recent tenant of the building was Cuttin' Up Beauty Salon.

Alleghany County Director of Elections Karen K. Fender said in an interview Monday that the office's current location is much too crowded. The office, which is divided into a crowded director's office and a small reception area, just didn't offer enough room to accommodate voting equipment, Fender commented.
