'Blevins' founder dies here

Wayne Monroe Blevins, co-founder of Blevins Building Supply with his father, Quincy Blevins, died Sunday morning at Alleghany Memorial Hospital.

Blevins, who lived in Glade Valley, was 86.

He was born on March 17, 1915, to Quincy and Emma Combs Blevins and he and his father started what eventually became Blevins Building Supply in 1946 as building contractors.

However, having a need for items such as windows and cabinets, they started Blevins Workshop to supply their contracting business. As time passed, the company became more involved in building supplies.

Wayne Blevins was later joined in the business by his two sons, Bill and the late Carl Dean. The business has remained a family enterprise, with grandson Billy now running the newest Blevins location, which is on North Main Street in Sparta.

The original store and workshop in Glade Valley is still in operation, along with a location on Main Street in Galax, Va. which is currently expanding.

Wayne Blevins is survived by his wife, Reba Edwards Blevins, and six grandchildren.

A funeral was held on Tuesday at Grandview Memorial Chapel with burial at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, which is located near his home.

A complete obituary for Blevins appears on Page 9 of this week's edition.
