The Community of Promise Grant Committee has awarded six grants to local organizations serving youth.
The preliminary total of those grants was $16,100.
Alleghany County Volunteer Center, in conjunction with the Alleghany County Education Foundation, was awarded a $25,000 grant from America's Promise in November of 2001.
America's Promise-The Alliance for Youth is a national organization committed to assisting youth.
The monies awarded will be used to help meet the organization's five promises here in Alleghany County. Those promises include providing an ongoing relationship with a caring adult, safe places and structured activities, a healthy start, marketable skills through effective education and an opportunity to serve.
The committee awarded grant funding to a total of six community organizations.
Specifically, the group awarded $5,000 to JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) at Sparta Elementary School to help pay for staffing needs; $1,500 to the Character Education Task Force to help facilitate a survey and print brochures and other materials; $2,500 to 4-H to give eight clubs $300 for educational materials supplies.
