Birth rates are steady at hospital

The local birth rate held steady last year at Alleghany Memorial Hospital.

Deborah Yarborough, marketing director at the local hospital, said 58 babies were born at AMH in 2001, compared to 60 in 2000 and 56 in 1999.

March and October were the busiest childbirth months last year, with nine births each. That created a three-way tie with November 2000 for the month with the most births since 1993 (the earliest year for which figures were readily available). At the other end of the spectrum, January 2001 saw only one birth at the hospital. May 1998 was the last month with zero births.
