General public transportation could be just around the corner for countyBy ROBBY LUCKEStaff The gray vans seen making their way around town serve as a visible reminder that Alleghany in Motion (AIM), the county’s coordinated transportation program, is under way. Two of the program's main three phases are literally up and running, while more activity is being planned. |

Begun Nov. 1, 2001, Alleghany in Motion is now serving human services agencies in the county as well as providing transportation for medical needs. County Transportation Director Jim Page said he is about to propose the initial zones of the rural general public portion of the program — a kind of pre-arranged bus service.
Member agencies served by AIM include New River Behavioral Health Care, the Adult Developmental Vocational Program, the Alleghany County Family Resource Center, the Council on Aging and Adult Day Health Care at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. Service to those agencies was the first phase of the transportation program which was implemented, and Page said seven or eight routes run each day Monday through Friday, beginning at about 6:45 a.m., with a second run at 8 a.m. Return travel starts at noon, with the last runs beginning at 3:15 to 3:30 p.m.
Page said AIM started doing all of the county's Edtap (elderly and disabled transportation) transit in late November.
