AMH to give free flu shots

With the first outbreak of influenza not yet reported here, Alleghany Memorial Hospital is offering two free influenza vaccination clinics and is suggesting that local residents prepare for the onset of the virus. According to Dr. Carolyn Bridges of the Centers for Disease Control, "vaccination is strongly encouraged to continue in January and beyond as long as the influenza vaccine is available." Influenza, commonly called the flu, is typically more dangerous to the elderly and those with chronic disease or immune system disorders.

In addition to anyone who has yet to get a shot this year, those who have received flu shots in October or early November should consider booster shots, since flu season has not yet officially hit Alleghany County. AMH has not used all the flu vaccine that was purchased and must use the remainder of the vaccine this season.

The first clinic will take place this Friday, Jan. 18, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. A second clinic will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Both clinics will be held in the hospital's lobby. For more information, contact Mary Jones at 372-3201.
