State figures for child abuse show an increase, but Alleghany County has not shown the same rise in child abuse rates. In fact, the numbers locally have held steady.
According to a N.C. Department of Health and Human Services release, of the state's 1,964,047 children under age 18, 102,158 were the subject of an investigative assessment — that is, were reported as having been abused or neglected — during the 2000-01 fiscal year. That computes to a rate of 52.01 per 1,000 children, up from 51.26 for 1999-2000.
