N.C. DOT reports no major problems

While the first two snowstorms of the season, both within the past week, kept N.C. Department of Transportation crews busy, officials did not report any unusual difficulties.

"I'm not aware of any major problems," said Brandon W. Whitaker, the DOT's maintenance engineer for Alleghany and Yadkin counties.

The storm Jan. 3 hit North Carolina's Piedmont and parts of the state to the east harder than the mountains. Whitaker said there were four or five inches of snow in Yadkin near the Forsyth County line. Alleghany received significantly less. Crews used mostly salt on the roads then.

The DOT sometimes uses "chad," a mixture with small, gravel-like particles. That is sometimes mixed with liquid calcium chloride, which helps that material work at lower temperures.
