Winter weather finally reached Alleghany County last Thursday, when as much as three inches of snow fell in the county.
The storm had been predicted to bypass the county early on and then later it was forecast to dump large amounts of snow here — as much as eight inches. However, the county ‘dodged the bullet' and the biggest part of the storm hit the eastern part of the state, dumping nearly a foot of precipitation in a line from Raleigh to the northeast into Virginia and Pennsylvania.
A smaller weather maker visited the county on Sunday, bringing some snow and rain to roadways. As the rain and slush froze on roads Sunday night, early morning traveling remained treacherous in many parts of the county. Many secondary roads were still covered with frozen precipitation as of presstime Tuesday. Even though roads were often dangerous, few accidents were blamed on the road conditions, reports filed by the N.C. Highway Patrol show.
