Extension offers free radon testing

Concerned about radon proliferation in your home? The Alleghany County Cooperative Extension Office just may be able to assist you with your worries.

The extension, working in conjunction with the N.C. Division of Radiation Protection, is offering free radon testing for local residents.

The project involves testing homes in the county for radon in air and water during the week of Jan. 28 through Feb. 2.

To be eligible, participants must:

This will involve placing a radon monitor in the home on Jan. 28 and collecting the monitor on Feb. 1. A water sample will be collected on Feb. 1 as well. Participants will mail both detector kits to the laboratory for analysis using a provided postage paid mailer.

Those wishing to participate will fill out some brief background information on their home and water source and pick up test kits for the project between Wednesday, Jan. 23 and Friday Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the cooperative extension office (at the county office building) on Main Street in Sparta. Participants will be supplied with all the materials and instructions at no charge. The test kits will be distributed to the first 150 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Results of the radon tests will be provided to participants by the laboratory free of charge. A summary of the study results will be provided at a public meeting later this spring.

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer, according to the news release.
