A new campground at Stone Mountain State Park will have the park's first electrical and water hookups for recreational vehicles (RVs) and more than double its existing number of campsites.
The $1.5 million project on about 10 acres adjoining the park's existing campground is to open in early 2004, said Stone Mountain Park Superintendent Edward Farr.
With about 700,000 visitors annually at the park and only 37 campsites, none with RV hookups, the existing campground is often full from early May to late November, said Farr.
"We get a lot of calls from people with campers wanting hookups, but we just don't have it," he added.
"We hope to add 45 to 50 campsites in the new campground, with the majority having full hookups for electrical and water.
"There will be a dump station for waste," he said. The 900-square-foot campsites will have enough space for a long RV with a canopy, tent, campfire area and picnic table.
The project will also include a heated comfort station with three toilets, four showers and three sinks for women and the same for men on the other side. There will be an entrance station that will be manned in peak periods to register campers.
