Alleghany Memorial Hospital has announced ambitious plans for expansion and is asking the community to help with a campaign known as "New Legacy Challenge." According to a release from the hospital, AMH plans to add 18,200 square feet of new surgery and emergency department space and 5,900 square feet of renovated outpatient, laboratory and radiology space.

The project, which will cost $8 million, including equipment, is to be done in three phases. Phase one will include construction of a new emergency room, two operating room suites, two labor-delivery-postpartum rooms and one four-bed specialty care unit.

In phase two, the old emergency and surgery departments will be renovated to expand the radiology department, and outpatient/ambulatory surgery services will be developed.
