While growers say local trees are of high quality this year and demand is especially high, there should be plenty of trees for the county's annual Choose and Cut Day event on Dec. 1.
The event is sponsored by the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director Leanne Murray said Tuesday that her office has been flooded with calls.
Murray, who was hired earlier this year, is experiencing the event for the first time.
"Our phone rings all day long," she said. "We've been directing people to the chamber office."
Murray said the office will feature a large map in the window to help direct prospective tree buyers to farms in the county. The map will also feature other information, such as services offered at each farm. Also at the chamber office (and outside) will include informational pamphlets, food vendors and displays.
The event officially will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 5 p.m. At the chamber office, Eddie Motley will be selling barbecue and the Alleghany County Family Resource Center will be vending a breakfast of biscuits and beverages.
Another vendor will be selling hamburgers and other food items during lunchtime hours at the Emerson Black Exhibition Building, which will also feature a craft display.
About 30 booths featuring handmade crafts will be on hand, with items including traditional Christmas ornaments, wreaths and roping, jewelry, outdoor furniture, handmade soaps and other items. Vendors from Alleghany and around the region will be involved.
