Veterans Day came early in Alleghany County, as pupils and staff at local schools paid tribute to veterans Nov. 9, the last day of school before the official holiday.

Veterans Day is traditionally observed Nov. 11, which was Sunday, while the federal holiday is held the second Monday of November.

Glade Creek Elementary School held its annual Veterans Day assembly in its gymnasium, while Alleghany High School held its first-time Veterans Day celebration in the old gym.

Members of the Bruce Wayne Osborne Post No. 7034 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars marched in both events.

AHS students pay tribute to veterans, marching around the gym after unfurling a large American flag, as the school band performs a patriotic medley.
