The A. Anderson Huber Cyber Campus will "show off" its new expanded facilities this evening, Thursday, Nov. 8.
Dignitaries expected to appear at the open house include at least one national figure and possibly some state and regional officials. Final confirmation on some attendees was not available as of presstime on Tuesday. According to a release from the cyber campus, which is located at Alleghany High School, the physical space has more than doubled. The cyber campus has added a 40-seat, video distance learning "cybertorium," (formerly the AHS band room), a state-of-the-art control room, a 15-seat community computer lab, a video-editing studio, restrooms and a student cyber lounge.
Cyber Campus Manager J. Travis Sturgill said Thursday evening's program will include announcements about the Blue Ridge Telecenter, Wilkes Community College-Alleghany's expanded offerings, the Community Technology Learning Center and "e-N.C. Techforce" opportunities. Sturgill said former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles, who has also been a leader in the effort to establish Internet centers, is confirmed as planning to attend the open house.
Representatives from the N.C. Rural Internet Access Authority will also be present. That group recently cooperated with the county to help fund the telecenter project.
State Sen. Virginia Foxx and State Rep. Rex Baker may also attend, depending on the legislative session's timing.
Media coverage there may include regional newspapers and television stations. The open house program will begin at 6 p.m., with refreshments available starting at 5:30 p.m. The program will also be telecast live on cable Channel 50.
