Several Halloween activities set this weekend in the area
Calling all pumpkinheads: several Halloween-related activities are
scheduled in Alleghany County during the next several days. Most are
youth- and/or family-oriented.
While Halloween night, Oct. 31, falls on a Wednesday this year, most of
the events take place this coming weekend.
- Sparta Elementary School's Fall Festival is slated for this evening —
Thursday — from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Admission is
free. Refreshments such as hot dogs, nachos, snow cones and cotton candy
will be available. Game booths for children, a ‘moon walk,' a raffle and
silent auction and prizes will be featured.
- On Saturday, Oct. 27, Glade Creek Elementary School's Parent-Teacher
Organization will hold its haunted house in the school's gym. Admission
is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
- The Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary will
also present its annual haunted house. That event is both Friday and
Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the fire house. Admission is $5 for
adults, $3 for ages six to 13 and free for children under six. That
price includes refreshments. Goblins and ghouls will be featured. Vickie Segraves, one of the
organizers, said they are trying to make the haunted house different and
better than last year, with a surprise ending in store for visitors.
Anyone wanting more information on the LSVFD haunted house may contact
Segraves at 246-6991.
- New Direction Youth Ministries' sixth annual "Hallelujah Night" is
Saturday, Oct. 27 at the New Direction Youth Building on Doughton
Street. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m., including games, music
with a DJ, refreshments and entertainment by the Small Beginnings Dance
Team. From 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., a youth dance will be held. Those attending are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Biblical characters; they may alternately make their costumes after they arrive. Pam Caudill is available for more information about the New Direction
event at 372-8098.
- The Little Farm in Ennice offers "Halloween fun without the fear" on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. The first 25 children will receive free pumpkins. For more information, call the business at 657-3013.
